Portugal is a sovereign state and the westernmost country of mainland Europe. Located on the Iberian Peninsula in the southwest of Europe, it borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and Spain to the north and east. The autonomous regions Madeira and the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores are also included to its territories. Although Portugal does not have a coastline on the Mediterranean, it is still counted for climatic and cultural reasons to the Mediterranean countries.
As the oldest state on the Iberian Peninsula its territory has been settled, invaded and fought over continuously since prehistoric times. The ancestors of these people traveled the oceans and were the first link between Europe and many other cultures. Understand the Portuguese by sharing their traditions, history, food and wine as the famous Port wine. There are many other excellent wines in Portugal such as the refreshing Vinho Verde.
